You’re not doing yourself any favors if you spend too much time going through muscle/fitness magazines that feature perfectly sculpted bodies. The media as well as every magazine rack is full of images that display people with the time and resources to achieve such amazing results. Those of us with limited time and money cannot spend all day at the gym and always eating the ideal meals and supplements. If you can gain inspiration from such people, that’s fine, but don’t let yourself get discouraged by comparing yourself to them. If you have to make comparisons, stay focused on comparing yourself to how you used to look and not on people in magazines and the media.
One fitness goal that’s very common is to obtain well defined abs -or a six pack, as it’s often called. Keep in mind that there’s something artificial about the six pack, and you don’t have to have this to look great. Having more impressive abs is not only about developing the muscles in that region, but also about getting rid of any excessive fat that’s covering them up. It’s not so much that fitness models and bodybuilders have huge stomach muscles as that they’ve successfully worked off most of the fat that normally covers up these muscles. Getting rid of body fat will do more to give you a six pack than doing hundreds of abdominal exercises.
Weight lifting and muscle building machines are an important part of any fitness program, as you probably know. Another thing that’s crucial, though, is doing a variety of exercises so you have a balanced workout. See to it that you do exercises that work muscles throughout your body, upper and lower. Your goal should be muscle development that’s spread evenly throughout your body. If some of your muscles are overdeveloped and other underdeveloped, the results aren’t very impressive. Additionally, having come muscles much more developed than others is risky to your health. Such imbalances make it much more likely that you’ll get injured at some point.
As you work out, you should get used to paying close attention to what your body is telling you. If you’re alert, you’ll find that you are always getting important signals from your body. If you do a good warmup before your regular workout, for instance, you can observe if there are any tight areas. If you do spot any tightness, you should take measures to loosen them up. Warming up and stretching is essential for getting loose and flexible. You’re much less likely to injure yourself if your muscle groups and joints are loose and well stretched.
